Tyler Cran
October 4, 1949 - October 2, 2021
Tribute
Tyler, Ty, T.C., Rooney, Honey, Grandpa, Dad……Dad passed away peacefully at home in Osoyoos, BC on October 2, 2021. He was the first born to Duncan and Eileen Cran and grew up in the Rosscarrock area of Calgary, Alberta. When Dad was in high school, the family moved to Dallas, Texas but due to a desire not to be drafted into the Vietnam War, he returned back to Calgary. Dad finished high school, accepted $500 from his parents and enrolled in the University of Alberta obtaining a BComm degree. After travelling Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Dad started working as a Landman. Quickly, he realized he needed to be his own boss and embarked on a career of “never really having a job.” Dad could tell you countless business stories and dealings and the “rush” he got from what he did, but I never really got it. All I know is that he was good at making money. Dad was a competitor, a fighter, a good family man, a provider, and he loved his kids and family. Dad could be a hard-ass but kids (especially his grandchildren) or pets would always bring out his “big-ole-softy” side. He was an avid golfer belonging to Pinebrook Golf Club (C-Syndicate), Osoyoos Golf Club and the prestigious Desert Forest Club in Carefree, AZ. At 56, Dad was diagnosed with cancer and underwent radiation therapy. Although he was declared “cancer free”, the radiation treatments had done its damage. Later in life, he became involved in philanthropy creating a Foundation at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (Pet Therapy & Special Needs program) and other projects through his involvement with the Rotary Club of South Calgary. Everyone who came to his 65th birthday bash will remember it, as $65,000 was raised for the ACH. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place when the Travelling Mabels played Dad’s favourite song Loch Lomond (thank you Tom Jackson). For 17 years Dad, battled the effects of the radiation therapy, but he did it with strength and a will to live his life. During that time, he kept golfing, cruised the world, took me to the 2007 Masters, wrote his life’s memoire, became a grandpa, loved and supported his family, and of course continued to make money without having a job. Dad is survived by his loving partner and wife Susan, two sons Rick (Lisa) and Daniel, three grandchildren, Madison, Sophia, and Joseph, as well as his brothers Calvin (Colleen), Allan (Kelly-deceased), and sister Coreen (Ed). So, like he taught me, we are all going to continue with strength, get up each morning, put one foot in front of the other, and keep our eye on the ball. That is what must be done to live life and that’s what he would want us to do. I will always love you, and boy, am I going to miss you Dad. Love Rick

Relation: Great old friends
To Susan, Rick, Daniel and the entire Cran family. Please accept Peggy and my heartfelt condolences on Tyler‘s recent passing.
I will remember Tyler as a loyal friend and a very important mentor to me early in my career. We were in business together as colleagues, partners and even competitors. We enjoyed many great times together including attending many Flames games and played lots of golf. Tyler was always patient with my bad golf game, for example, if I was hitting them all over the place, he’d help me relax and say something like “…don’t worry about it just hit it another one and we we will go and find it…” Tyler was an important friend of mine and I’m going to miss him very much.

Relation: We were friends who met through our business relationship
So sorry to hear about Tyler’s passing. We shared a lot in doing our business together. Rick’s words summed Tyler up very well; Tyler could be a hard ass, but he had the biggest heart, so it made it so easy to work with him. When he had his successes in business, he shared it with the community. When he was having difficulties in business, or in his battle with his cancer, he never complained. I admired his strength and hold on to the words of wisdom he provided me over the years. We battled cancer together at about the same time. My treatment did not impact my life like it did Tyler’s. He was so brave in his approach and he took it on like he took on life, straight-on. To the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you, Tyler was a mentor, a colleague and a friend. I will miss him, but I will not forget everything that he taught me about business but more importantly about life.
Sincerely,
David Hird, Managing Partner RSM Canada (formerly Collins Barrow)

Irene and I are sorry to learn of Tyler’s passing and send deepest condolences to you, Susan and all the family.
Tyler had a significant impact in any activity in which he was involved and this includes Pinebrook G. C. where as president he brought in changes that strengthened the young club.
He had an interesting and thoughtful point of view on a wide variety of subjects and it was enlightening to have a conversation with him.
I will miss his comments and sage inputs.

I knew Tyler through Pinebrook Golf Club and his many business interests. He was always a great partner with interesting points of view and he and Susan have been missed since they left for Osoyoos. He was undoubtedly happy in early Sept. this year when in the 27th annual Challenge Cup at Pinebrook his eponymous team, the “Cranites”, won handily!
From: Chris Reimchen
Relation: Brother of his good Earnest Manning HS buddy.
Please accept our belated condolences. Tyler was a good of my brother in High School and golfed with Bill Reimchen at Pinebrook for many. He was groomsman at his wedding and lost contact when Bill moved to Fort Saskatchewan. My brother just passed unexpectedly and Tyler’s name surfaced when I was preparing Bill eulogy. We still talk about his old MG that rusted out floorboards where you could see the pavement as you drove Bill may the last of crew to pass. Terry Gordon and Jay Merkel have both passed. The only one that I cannot connect is the fourth, Gary Nichol.
