Wesley Gordon Herrington

November 10, 1924 - February 10, 2014

Tribute

Wesley Gordon Herrington, our beloved father, passed away at Sunnybank Centre in Oliver BC on Monday, February 10 at the age of 89.  Known as Gordy, he was born to Mary and Oscar Herrington November 10, 1924 in Minitonas, Manitoba.  He moved with his family to the Lloydminster, Saskatchewan area as a child, where he grew up, married Lorna Seabrook and raised a family of five daughters.  He began as farm fuel delivery driver and worked his way up to office manager at the local Bulk Esso Plant.  He was a very talented self-taught carpenter and mechanic, a jack-of-all trades, who could build or fix just about anything.  He enjoyed many hobbies over the years including raising chinchillas, bee keeping, fishing, camping and later down-hill skiing.  He was involved in starting up the Lloydminster Rock and Gem Club and helped develop the local cross country ski club.  He and Mom retired to Oliver in 1981 where he was able to indulge his life-long passion for gardening.  He perfected his skills of grafting and had many wonderful varieties of apples, cherries and plums and other fruits, vegetables and flowers growing in his garden.  Together they would can peaches, make jams and pickles, and dry fruit and then every Fall do a “Grand Tour” to visit his daughters and distribute the produce to them of all.  He cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he instilled in all his daughters his love of gardening and family life.  His memory will be treasured by all of us.

He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Lorna in late 1998, brother, Norman and sisters, Rita LaMambe and Evelyn Allen.   He will be sadly missed by his five daughters, Ruth of Oliver BC, Jeanie (Wally) of Athabasca Alberta, Shellie (Ernie) of Oliver BC, Jill (Terry) of Squamish BC and Dawna (Randy) of Delburne  Alberta, ten grandchildren,  eleven great-grandchildren,  brother Orville (Lynn) of Cawston BC, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sunnnybank Centre, The Heart and Stroke Fund, Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
