William (Bill) Markowsky

April 19, 1916 - April 12, 2016

Tribute

On Tuesday April 12, 2016, Mr. William (Bill) Harvey of Penticton passed away peacefully at the Penticton Regional Hospital at the age of 99 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Anastasia Markowsky; grandson Owen Lee Markosky and half-sister Marilyn Campbell (nee Galganetz).

Bill will be fondly remembered by his loving wife (Greta) Ella Daphne Markowsky; son Ernest “Ernie” (Sylvia) Markosky; grandchildren Wendy-Lynn Markosky and Aron Lane Markosky;half-sister Ann Carson (nee Galganetz), age 95 years of Portland, Oregon as well as many nieces and nephews in the United States and Canada.

Bill could only speak Ukrainian when starting school but achieved all grades to High School and University Matriculation in six years. In later years he learned and spoke pure Ukrainian. He often translated for public speakers in whatever language was required. He also understood many other European languages and helped Doctors to understand their patients needs, becoming like a second Doctor.

Bill worked as a carpenter, builder and general contractor over the years. He worked for the Vegreville School Division, he built a hospital in Cutknife, SK, various churches and a firehall in Myrnum, Alberta as well as many other businesses.

He also liked to travel and enjoyed trips to Australia, New Zealand, the British Isles, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Hawaii, the United States, the Canadian Arctic and a trip train across Canada to the Maritimes.

Over the years Bill was very involved with the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Canada and Fiji. Bill helped with building, donated his time and money and with the Ministry of Encouragement in Fiji and Vanuatu. He received may cards and letters of appreciation from across Canada and the Pacific Islands. He also greatly enjoyed building in all its phases and building carts for kids.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday April 25, 2016 at the Penticton Seventh-day Adventist Church followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment and committal will be held at 3:00 pm at the Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery.

Donations in Bill’s name are gratefully accepted for ADRA Canada.

Thank you Greta for sending me the life sketch and other enclosures of your posted program of your dear Bill. I remember some outings we enjoyed including the day we went to see the DANCING HORSES and I recall your spunky spectacles !!!!
We will keep in touch as we keep our eyes focused on our soon-to-come Saviour.
It seems so long ago since you left Oz so my news would be of persons you possibly dont know. Ibbotts are up visiting elder son and family in Brisbane and will be back Wednesday. I am collecting their mail so noted you have sent them your news also.
Did you remember Zelma Harris (Wahroonga in 50’s?) She lives in Takoma Park under her married name.
I am watching Sabbath service now.
Tom is not coping so well and it is so hard for me to visit.
You possibly have lots of paperwork to do now.
Bill and you have attained much with God’s blessings.
Elizabeth.
