Winifred Freddie Pugh
May 1, 1920 - November 1, 2010
Tribute
PUGH, WINIFRED BLAIR: died surrounded by family in Penticton on November 1, 2010 at the age of 90. “Freddie” was born in Montreal in 1920. Freddie’s service to public health in Canada was long and varied. She received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Western Ontario in 1943 and served overseas in WW II with the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. In 1948, she accepted a nursing position in Oliver B.C., where she met and married Major David Pugh, a lawyer. Together they raised nine children. Freddie was a huge support to David while he was a Conservative MP for Okanagan Boundary; she helped manage his campaigns and was active in the party’s ladies auxiliary. She later resumed her career in Nursing and Public Health Nursing and retired in 1983.
Freddie loved to walk on her hands, go on adventures, and polish her boots. She loved to listen and laugh and sing Calypso. She loved to swim in big waves in the ocean, and dig in the earth and pull weeds. She loved children. She loved to have tea parties under the big maple tree. She loved to camp and to drive a Volkswagen van to Mexico and Alaska. She loved to ski and cook and read. She loved her home and family and friends. She was a dear friend and a cherished wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother. You were good to all of us, Freddie.
Freddie is predeceased by her brother, Donald Smith, her husband, David, and son, Roger. Freddie is survived by her sister, Alexandra (San) French, daughters Meredith, Deborah, Elizabeth, Alison, and Mary, sons David, Donald, and John, and by 18 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. A celebration of Freddie’s life will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010, at 1 p.m. in St. Edward the Confessor Anglican Church, at 34660 103rd St., Oliver, B.C. A reception will follow at the family home at Gallagher Lake, 38897-95th Street. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

My condolences to Winifred Pugh’s family, especially to Deborah who was a classmate through school, to David who was in my patrol in Scouts, and to Alison with whom I worked with the B. C. and Yukon Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society Canada. Although I did not know your mother, I know the high regard in which she is held in Oliver. May your memories fill the void of her loss.
From: Heather Piotz
Relation: Long time friend of John Pugh
My deepest sympathy to John and his family. Thinking of you all.
