Alfred Schaffrick

January 2, 1932 - February 4, 2023

Tribute

Alfred “Alf” Schaffrick 91, passed away February 4, 2023 peacefully in the Oliver hospital.  He was born January 2, 1932 in Januschew, Poland.  Alf was a kind-hearted, quiet man who loved to read, keep up with current events, and spend time in his orchard.

When Eastern armies invaded Poland, the family fled along with millions of other Eastern Europeans to the West. They were soon relieved of their possessions by the invaders and spent part of 1945-46 in two refugee camps near the Polish-German border. The family was resettled in northern Germany in a small village (Ruehle) near Hameln in 1946. They immigrated to Canada in the early 1950s and stayed in the Edmonton area. In April of 1956 the family moved to Oliver. They saw the beautiful fruit growing valley and saw the potential for orcharding.  Before purchasing his orchard, Alf had worked in construction on a job site in Cranbrook where he met his future wife Jill who happened to be the boss’ daughter.

When Alf wasn’t working in his orchard, he spent his time gardening, doing some traveling with his family, including a trip back to Poland and Germany, enjoying time with his five grandkids, and having a cold beer on a hot day.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years – Jill; daughter Sheri (Vic) Hamilton, grandchildren Sophie and Fynn, daughter Susan Schaffrick, grandson Travis; son Steve Schaffrick, and son Scott (Joanne) Schaffrick and grandchildren Jackson and Ryder.  He is also survived by brother Harry (Janice) – Costa Rica, sisters: Margret Lewis – Newcastle-Warner’s Bay, NSW. Australia; Hanna – Osoyoos; Trudy Singleton – Bowen, Queensland, Australia; Ursula (Leo) Degenhardt – Oliver and sister-in-law Donna Hazell (Gary) Salmon Arm; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Otto and Alice Schaffrick, brother Erwin and Richard.  Special thanks to nurse Kevyn at South Okanagan General Hospital for his compassionate care.

As Alf loved animals, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the SPCA.

Condolences to the Schaffrick Family. I never met Alfred, but judging by the character of his son Scott, he must have been a good man.

Dear Jill and family – please accept our sincere condolences, from us your old neighbours on Yarrow Street. We were saddened to hear of Alf’s passing. He was always such a kind, gentle soul and more than generous sharing “ the fruits of his labour” ie his yummy cherries, with our family. May he now Rest In Peace, knowing he left behind a legacy of kindness, a loving family and so much more. Jack and Heather Frank
