D. Larry Boan

November 14, 1935 - April 14, 2022

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on Thursday, April 14, 2022 of our beloved David Larry Sydney Boan at age 86.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol, his son, Brent (Dana) Boan of Comox, BC; daughters, Barbara (Geoffrey) Plowden of Los Angeles, CA, and Shannon (David) Culbert of High River, AB; as well as seven grandchildren, Jack, Nate, and Emme Boan, Sierra and Kailyn Plowden, Dane and Danyka Culbert. Larry was predeceased by 4 sisters and 2 brothers, and is survived by his “kid” sister Bonnie (Calgary, AB), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry was born on November 14, 1935 in Rouleau, SK, 25 miles from Regina, the 7th child of David Sydney and Agnes Matilda Boan (nee Nimmo). In spite of it being the Great Depression, their tiny farm home was always filled with laughter, love, and hearty meals for all who graced their doorway. From an early age, Larry was known for his love of the RCMP, and after working for about 5 years doing road construction, seeding and harvesting with the Taylor Brothers, Larry joined the RCMP in 1960. Larry excelled in equitation, having ridden horseback to school, and stayed on for 3 months as a riding instructor. His first posting was in Duncan, BC, where on a blind date, he met Carol, his future bride. Six months before their wedding, Larry was transferred to Courtenay, where eventually their 3 children were born. Larry’s career took them to North Vancouver, then on to Surrey, while the family settled in Langley for 17 years. Larry retired as Staff Sergeant after a successful 30-year career, having had such a positive impact as watch commander for many members.

Always involved in his children’s activities, Larry coached lacrosse and hockey, eventually having time to play hockey himself. Larry was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders football fan, and devoted Vancouver Canucks hockey fan.

In 1990, Larry and Carol relocated to Osoyoos, BC where they built their dream home on the lake and enjoyed 32 wonderful years of retirement, travel, and good times with friends and family. They built strong ties in the community through gardening, Citizen Patrol and many outdoor pursuits. Larry will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour, loyalty, and love of people.

Larry will be buried at RCMP DEPOT in Regina on Friday, May 20th at 2:00 pm with a Celebration of Life to follow at Speers Funeral Home in Regina. COVID vaccinations required.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Canada, 316-4211 Yonge St, North York, ON M2P 9Z9. Condolences and tributes may be left for the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com

Staff Sergeant Larry Boan was the complete definition of a Gentleman. His management skills on a watch were second to none. He lead with respect, compassion, wisdom, education, fairness and expectation. If you were on his watch you didn’t want to let him down, you worked three times harder for him and you had the greatest time working in the environment he created. Members from all watches and sections wanted to come to D Watch in North Van. His foundation in life was his family. If you had a coffee with him at three in the morning he would tell you about everything that was happening with Carol, his children, Brent, Barb, Shannon and his Brother and Sister in Law, Wib and Viv. That was his strength and reason for being. Later in life those stories would extend to the accomplishments of his Sons and Daughter in Law and Grandchildren. As a Staff he would come out on the road and go to calls. One night the the prisoner van was full and the occupants were rocking it so bad I thought it would flip over. Larry calmly walked up and talked to them through the door telling them he would get them back to the station and they would be on their way in a few hours. They all stopped. We were all in awe of his calming verbal abilities. The organization is trying to apply management skills and techniques to members and the public today that Larry was using forty years ago. He told me his Father had taught him to be kind to people when they were in need and in their most difficult times. His dress and deportment were impeccable, five and ten K runs into his fifties ensured the standard of a Mountie in uniform. His professionalism was beyond reproach and yet his humour bonded us. When an Officer came to our briefings and asked the Staff where are name tags were, Larry would say Sir we’ve memorized our names and threw the tags away. You just had to love the guy. Later in life he challenged illness with dignity and grace and stayed strong for his family. He showed us all how to live in the face of adversity. Larry Boan was closer to me than my own Father. He taught me all of the days that I worked with him in E Division. I am thankful for his life, that he had a truly wonderful life with his family and the RCMP and that he is returning home to Depot to rest. You cannot replace a man of that calibre, you only hope those that follow in his footsteps come close. God speed Larry, I will miss you. My condolences to Carol and the entire Boan family. Terry Russel
