FREDERICK ALEXANDER McKIE
July 8, 1911 – June 14, 2010
Fred was born in Vancouver, raised in Grand Forks and area, died peacefully on June 14, 2010 at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos, BC. Predeased by wife Alison Vickery McKie in 1970.
Survived by his daughter Geraldine Alison McKie, and niece Vicki V. Sharp (Malcolm).
His father John McKie founded Boundary Iron Works, Ltd in 1914; (John, newly elected Conservative MLA, was killed in the Doukhobor bomb explosion on the CPR train in 1924 ) Fred eventually took over the ownership of the Foundary. Fred had many occupations- 5 years with the Vancouver Police Force, served in the Canadian Navy (he was a proud Veteran), and acquired his papers for Marine Engineer; In Port Alice, BC, he worked on the whaling boats for a few years: He was Chief Engineer on the Black Ball Ferry on the Sunshine Coast, and finally ending his working days on the Okanagan Lake Tugs. Fred enjoyed many hobbies- when serving in the Navy, fashioning a variety of objects from metals when the opportunity arose; hunting, fishing, camping, leather work, reading; he had a great passion for swimming, in pools, Okanagan Lake and in the past 28 years Osoyoos Lake. He earned a swimming Certificate at the Kelowna Pool. He will be greatly missed … he’s at Peace. No service by request.
