John Caswell

June 2, 1952 - January 16, 2024

Tribute

John Edward Caswell passed away unexpectedly on January 16, 2024. He leaves behind daughter Andrea (Murray Fichten) and son Michael as well as his four grandchildren, Madelyn and Charlotte Fichten, and Avery and Arleigh Caswell. He was predeceased by his parents, Johh and Anne Caswell, and his sisters Joanne (Jones), Mary (Carrell) and brother Jim, and is survived by his eldest brother, Bill.

John was born and raised in Calgary, Ab and fondly remembered his time growing up in Altadore, playing kick the can, touch football and slalom skiing at Sylvan Lake in the summers. He attended Central Memorial High School where he excelled in Football and Basketball. He carried his passion for sports into adulthood, playing Calgary Men’s A Fastball and Slowpitch himself, and volunteering countless hours to fundraise, manage, or coach his kid’s various basketball, football and fastball teams throughout their youth.

John married his high school sweetheart, Diane (Steffler), in 1973 and delighted in raising his family in the Willow Park Community of SE Calgary. He enjoyed coaching his kids, card games with friends, downhill skiing, long drives with good music and camping—even earning a reputation among friends and family for building the biggest (and slightly dangerous) “John fires”.

John was kind and generous to a fault and was always willing to volunteer his time or labour to help anyone in need or fight for the underdog. He was very proud of his children and did his best to support and cheer them on with all their sporting events, whether that meant working bingos every weekend, or driving for 29 hours straight to be able to see his son play football in New Mexico, he did it unflinchingly.

John started his career in logistics, owning and operating JD Messenger and later The Expediters, and working for various other courier companies in Calgary. He moved to the Okanagan in 2004 for a new start. While making a home for himself in Oliver, BC he worked as a handyman, landscaper, pool maintenance specialist and property manager. After a short time in Fort MacMurray driving a taxi, John returned to the Okanagan and spent his retirement living in Oliver, BC.

We will not be hosting a Memorial at this time for John; however, in lieu of flowers, we ask you to honor John’s memory by gathering with friends for a good old fashioned bonfire “JC Style” to share your favourite moments and memories.

Sorry for your loss Andrea and family, we have good memories camping with your dad and mom. Everybody would wait until John parked his trailer and then try to be out of range of his mighty snoring. May all childhood memories bring you some peace, RIP John

We just want to let you know that our thoughts are with you, and your family. We are wishing you, and your family courage, and peace. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time.

We camped many times together when the kids were little. Played dice til the middle of the night, had giant campfires, awesome food and sometimes the most fun was trying to find the campground that John had discovered for the newest adventure. Lost touch over the years as it too often happens, but the memories and laughs continue on. Our condolences to the family and may your hearts be lightened a little bit by some of the good memories from years gone by.Rest in Peace John!

So sad. I grew up with John from elementary and up. Lost touch with him after high school. Ran into him again years later when our sons were in basketball.
I reconnected with him again a couple of years ago when I tracked him down in Oliver. Tried speaking on phone every few months. Was able to get together with him for lunch this summer when my husband and I visited the Okanagan,
I spoke with John about 2.5 weeks ago.
It was an upbeat kind of conversation. He was so happy to have his son back in Alberta again.
I feel sad. He was one of my oldest friends.
My condolences to his family,

We are so sorry for your loss. Tony has known John since elementary school and I for decades. We were great friends in our early adult years and shared a lot of fun times with our young families. Life happened and we drifted apart but, still feel the sadness of John’s passing.

I also knew John from our school years. Growing up in Altadore, many bonds were formed around neighborhood games and shenanigans! As teenagers, we hung out and supported each other. None more intensely, or with more heart, than John! Such a likeable guy! He will be missed.my condolences to his family. May he rest peacefully!

John was larger than life, always ready to pitch in for anyone who needed help. We know he is now at peace and will always have a place in our hearts. Our deepest condolences to Michael, Andrea, Murray and his grandchildren. Many thanks to John Nunes for helping Andrea deal with arrangements. Rest easy Big John.
