Raymond Emile Carriere
December 31, 1946 - August 15, 2024
Tribute
Raymond Emile Carriere, age 77, passed away peacefully among family on August 15, 2024, in Oliver, British Columbia. Ray was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and mentor who touched the lives of many throughout his years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Carmelle and Edmond Carriere, and his oldest sister, Laurie Thompson. Ray is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Ann Carriere and his loving family: sons Marc (Lise) and Damien (Michele); daughter Michaela (Ben); and ten cherished grandchildren, in addition to his brothers Dennis (Judy) and Ron (Pat) Carriere, sisters Paula Rousselle, Lou-Anne Carriere, and Michelle (Mario) Claro.
Ray was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, into a military family and was one of seven children. While teaching in Montreal, Ray met and married Ann. The couple decided to move to B.C., and Oliver – where they resided for 48 years – became their final destination.
Ray was best known in the Oliver community for the 30 years he dedicated as a teacher, coach, and mentor at Southern Okanagan Secondary School, Osoyoos Elementary School, and Oliver Elementary School. His commitment to education and the countless students whose lives he enriched will be remembered by many. Ray’s passion for teaching and mentoring extended beyond the classroom, as he was deeply involved in the development and growth of his students, always encouraging them to strive for excellence.
Ray loved participating in various sports, including cycling, tennis, pickleball, skiing, hockey, and hiking. He also enjoyed tending to his hobby orchard. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively, exploring destinations throughout Europe, China, and Thailand, as well as making multiple volunteer trips to the Philippines, where he made a lasting impact.
Ray was also a man of deep faith, serving as a longtime elder of the Oliver Alliance Church. His dedication to his faith community was a testament to his character and the values he held dear.
Ray’s legacy is one of kindness, gentleness, dedication, and love for his family. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held at Oliver Alliance Church on Saturday, September 14th at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s memory may be made to JoeAnna’s House which offers affordable, on-site accommodations for out-of-town families with loved ones receiving care at Kelowna General Hospital.

Dear Ann and family We were saddened to learn of Rays passing. When he came to Osoyoos Elementary, we got to see and appreciate his care and involvement with kids. He had a gentleness and kindness that his students and fellow teachers appreciated. He was a positive force on our staff and set a high example for all. May you find solace in a life well lived. We will miss him but remember all that he was and all that he did. Jerry and Sandra Albo

Relation: He was my teacher.
M. Carriere was my French teacher at SOSS from 1977 to 1981. He was very creative and had us learn in different ways including performing skits speaking French. I was fortunate to go on a Quebec exchange trip in grade 11. Our “twins” visited us from Quebec in the fall, and we travelled to Pont Rouge, St. Raymond, Quebec city and Montreal in April. Later our class was even hosted at the Carriere home for a gourmet French meal – merci, Mme. Carriere. My condolences to his family and friends.

Our deepest condolences to the Carrier Family. Ray was a colleague at Oliver Elementary School from a few years ago. His Grade 5 class was an awesome class to work in. There was never a dull moment in his classroom, even with the French subject that he taught, I couldn’t understand a word, but he played French lively songs which made it easier for students to learn. He was an awesome teacher to work with. Not only because he was an excellent teacher, but his kindness, his positive outlook of life and his willingness to help everyone in need, always had a great smile even when students are misbehaving badly.
Ray was also an amazing tennis and pickleball friend. His love for the sports shows when Ray and Ann hosted dinner for the whole tennis club members. And giving all the members a red Canada shirt for everyone to wear for one of our Canada Day Fun Day tennis.
Every time I see Ray wether at school, tennis and pickleball courts, he like to show off his few Tagalog words he learnt while in Philippines by greeting me Tagalog with a beautiful kind smile. We will miss you terribly Ray. Rest in Peace and thank you for being such and incredible person.💞🙏

Relation: Student
Mr Carriere was my Grade 7 teacher at Osoyoos Elementary School in 1991/92. I always remember that he was always fair with the students in the classroom. He always had jokes that were funny, and some that he just thought were funny – you know, the dad jokes. Thank you, Mr Carriere for all your years of teaching. I know you made an impression on many students. My deepest condolences to Ann, and the rest of the family.

Dear Ann and family,
Annette, and I were deeply saddened to hear of Ray’s passing. We just found out today from a friend, who lives in Oliver. You, and Ray were the first people we met in Canada, when we stayed at Two Loons on the Lake many years ago. Ray, was always a joy to hang out with, usually around the grill before dinner, as well as the many morning coffee chats, we had while visiting. I know you, and we will miss him in this short season called life, but we are looking forward to being neighbors in Heaven, and would love to catch up over a glass of the house red. Praying God’s peace will surround you, and your family.
