Tribute

Roberta (Robbie) Jean Wight, passed away on June 11th, 2024, in Penticton, British Columbia, surrounded by her loving children, Derek and Kara. Robbie was predeceased by her parents Robert and Beatrice, and her husband Dave. Robbie is survived by her two children, Derek (Heidi) and Kara (Joe); her five grandchildren Jarod, Brinn, Geordan, Rory and Rhys; her brother Mike (Sue) and her nephew Patrick (Mariah); extended family cousins Vicki (Peter) and Richard (Julia); and many in-laws, neighbours and dear friends. All will miss her dearly.

Robbie was born in Seattle, Washington, the youngest of two children of Robert Lonergan and Beatrice Lonergan (nee Burton). Robbie grew up in the Wedgwood neighbourhood with her dear older brother Mike and she made many close friends there. Following high school, Robbie attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated with a degree in Geography. It was at this time that Robbie met her future husband David (Dave) Laird Wight who also majored in Geography at the University of Washington.

Following her graduation, Robbie toured around Europe with Dave and thus began her lifelong love of travelling and the couple was married one year later. They left Washington for BC and initially moved to the Vancouver area where Robbie worked as a city planner for the City of Surrey. Subsequently, they relocated to the Okanagan Valley, where they raised their two children Derek and Kara.

Robbie loved to travel and explore, and this continued long after the untimely passing of her husband Dave in 2004. Robbie travelled all across North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and last, but not least, a visit to see the Emperor penguins in Antarctica. Her curiosity, independence, bravery and sense of adventure will never be forgotten.

Robbie will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. She truly had a life well-lived and we will carry a multitude of fond memories of Robbie with us always.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Robbie’s honour to the Southern Okanagan Branch of the SPCA: https://spca.bc.ca/donations/south-okanagan; or the Okanagan Regional Library (please select the Osoyoos branch in the “Fund” option): https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/w/52062.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said “it is not length of life but depth of life”. Robbie had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, in all its forms. She was well read and seized every opportunity to explore and learn. She pulled us into her world of travel and taught us not to be passive but to look beyond the well travelled path. Armed with her maps, and travel guides she led us into rarely explored corners of towns, and cities.
Her dinner invitations were an adventure. She would choose a theme and then pull together dishes and decorations that left you feeling you had been to another country. She was a hostess extraordinaire!
Above all Robbie was a true and loyal friend. Once she let you into her world , you were there for life. She was always interested in what you were doing or planning to do. Curiosity drove her, in the best ways, through life.
Robbie expressed her ‘lack of regrets’ about her life, and how it had unfolded. She had a very full life but most consuming was her love and pride if her children and grandchildren . She was so proud of how her children were getting on with their lives as partners and parents. Robbie’s life may have been cut off too soon but it was a rich, full life and she relished it all. Enjoy your next ‘adventure’ Robbie !
