Rudolf (Rudy) Miller

January 20, 1929 - February 17, 2023

Tribute

On Friday, February 17, 2023, Rudolf (Rudy) Miller of Oliver, passed peacefully into the loving arms of his Saviour.  He was 94 years old.

He is survived by his dear wife Doreen, daughter Darlene Hillson (David), son Larry Miller (Delia), daughter Mary Lynn McKay (Roy), son Gary Miller (Karen), son Wayne Miller (Rita), 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, brother Jack Miller and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents Rudolf and Dorothea (Mann) Miller, two granddaughters Donna-Jean Miller and Dayna Hillson, one grandson Justin Hillson, six sisters Katherine, Mary, Sophie, Elsie, Dorothy, Edith and one brother Eddie.

Rudy was born in Eatonia, SK, the eighth child in a family of nine. His father was a blacksmith and in 1942 the family decided to move to Oliver, BC.  They bought a 1½ acre lot with a small house on Fairview Rd.  Rudy entered Grade 9 and worked in the orchards, pruning, thinning and picking fruit. He made 35 cents an hour. On March 15, 1946, his graduation year, he was in a bad car accident with Ernie Kilback and Alec Bauder. His head went through the wind-shield and he got 36 stitches.  After graduation he went to work in the Oliver Hardware for 5 years.  In May 1951 he married Joyce Bredy (who was also from Eatonia). Together they had 5 children, Darlene, Larry, Mary Lynn, Gary and Wayne.

In 1951 they moved to Osoyoos, where he worked for Ernie Gaertner in the Marshall Wells store for 12 years.  Then in 1963 he decided to go into business for himself. He bought a building on Main Street in the fall of 1963 and in January he opened his own store, selling furniture, appliances, paint and flooring. Customers were loyal and supported the business so well that in 1965 he added onto the store and then in 1968 he bought the building next and connected the two buildings.

He served on the town council, was a director at the Osoyoos Credit Union and was very active in his church, Grace Lutheran, holding various positions, including being on the building committee for the current church which was dedicated in 1982.

Over the years he built many houses, starting with a small 8 x 16 ft. cabin. They lived in that with 2 children for a couple of years. Then they moved into a small duplex while he built the house on the lake. That was in 1955 and the lakeshore property cost $1,500. They lived there until 1962 when they swapped the house for a house and 10 acre orchard on 107th Ave. In 1964 while getting his business started, he built a house on highway 97, across the road from the present Baptist church. The last houses he built were in 1982. He sold one, partially completed, and moved into the other.

In 1994, Rudy retired, selling the business to Darlene and Larry, although he was always there to offer assistance and advice.  In 1999, he sold his house in Osoyoos and moved to Oliver. This is where he met Doreen and they married in 2005.

Rudy had many great vacations. His favourite was the yearly trip to Kona, Hawaii, to visit his sister Edith and her husband Gerry.  He also traveled to Mexico and went across Canada in 1997.
But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He was always there for them, offering love and support and encouragement. He will be greatly missed.

The family requests no flowers. Instead, donations to Canadian Lutheran World Relief for earthquake relief for Turkey and Syria and war relief for victims in Ukraine would be appreciated.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 1 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 6 Finch Crescent, Osoyoos, B.C. Cremation preceded the service and the urn interment will be in the Oliver Cemetery.  A luncheon will be service in the church hall after the committal.

The Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Louise and Mike
Relation: we were his customers for years, and I worked with his grand daughter Dawn.

We knew Rudy really well, and bought all our furniture from him. We are actually still using a freezer we bought from him in 1973, it is still working, amazing. Our sincere condolences to the family, RIP Rudy, you had a good and interesting life. From Mike and Louise Krekic, now of Penticton.

From: Diana Thomas
Relation: Friend

So very sad to hear the passing of Rudy. Have so many fond memories as well as his words of wisdom. I can remember a few times it would be Christmas eve and dad and I would be in the store, near closing time, to pick out mom’s gift. Not only did Rudy help us pick something out but would deliver it on his way home. I will miss your hugs. My condolences to the Miller family.

From: Garry Miller
Relation: Rudy was a great friend. We had coffee together many times at A&W and Tim Hortons.

I am very sorry for your loss. Rudy will be missed by many. He was a great friend. Please accept my deepest condolences at this time. May the Lord be your strength at this time.

From: Sheila Fesser McPhee
Relation: Church family

Our family knew Rudy well through Church affiliation. The Millers are a great family who have served their community so well over all the years in Osoyoos. Rudy was the epitome of “a good man”. Well done, thou good and faithful servant, Matthew 25:21.

From: Judy Dallas
Relation: Through his business in Town.

Have had the pleasure of knowing Rudy, and a number of his family members, since 1990. Purchased carpeting, flooring, furniture, etc. from him then and the working relationship continued for many years when I was working. He was the epitemy of a gentleman at all times, very engaging in conversations, and honest as well as being considerate and fair at all times. Am sure his family will have so many memories to cherish always. Rest in Peace, Rudy

From: Jim and Brenda Johnston
Relation: Rudy was Jim's Uncle

Sending condolences to all the Miller Families. Rudy will definitely be missed. Jim and I always enjoyed our visits with Rudy and family’s while visiting BC from Nova Scotia.. Rudy was always so welcoming and mentored Jim during the course of his aviation career. Rudy was well respected in the community and was loved by many. May he rest in peace and soar with the angels.

My friend and statesman figure, Rudy, and I met while having coffee and reading the newspaper w/i a week of me arriving in Oliver. After both of us seemingly realizing there was little in the newspaper of interest (other than his comics) we made eye contact at which time he invited me to sit with him. The best decision I made in Oliver was to accept his invitation. His warm eyes and famously popular smile made the decision easy for me. For many ensuing years we enjoyed each others company, often with coffee, and sharing our lives from the past to the present. Rudy would often have a moving, feel good story with a message or one which would inspire laughter.
Rudy often shared with me his rock solid faith which was evident in his word for word reciting of major and favorite passages from the bible as well as his day to day life actions. Rudy had a life passion to make a difference in other peoples lives by making himself available to assist whenever he was requested or he thought he could make things easier or better for someone. He evidently instilled this in all of his children whom all have inherited this same gift. A thank you and a smile was his reward. Rudy will always be remembered by those of us touched by his profound presence. To know Rudy was to meet him, his trustworthiness and sincerity were evident in his inviting smile. He spoke warmly and often of his wife and partner Doreen which always generated a smile. I wish to extend my condolences to Doreen and all of Rudy’s kind family.

From: Judy Sollows
Relation: Married to our mom, Doreen Miller

As the children of Doreen Miller, we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to all the Miller family members. Although Judy and Paul have not had the pleasure of spending time with Rudy in person, Jenny has met him , and formed a bond the instant they met . Jenny felt that she had known him forever. We have all had the opportunity over the years to speak with Rudy on the phone when we have chatted with our mom. His kind voice and thoughtful words have given us peace in knowing that our mom is loved by such a wonderful man and surrounded by so many of you all . We thank you all for including her into your family and showing her such love. Your dad must have been an amazing dad , from the stories we have heard, and from what we have read, he has spread his love and kindness throughout you all. May you all find peace in knowing he had a wonderful long life, filled with happiness, joy , family and two wonderful women by his side. Know that we feel your grief, as so many do who are grieving with you , for those who we have all lost. We wish you comfort and peace to face the days ahead , and loving memories to hold in your heart.
Love from,
Jenny , Judy & Paul
