Tribute

On Monday February 24, 2014, Mr. Viriato Dos Santos Madeira of Oliver passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the South Okanagan General Hospital at the age of 72 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Jose Lopes Madeira and Maria Augusta Dos Santos; brothers Antonio Lopes Madeira and Jose Dos Santos Lopes Madeira and his nephew Jose Brito Madeira.

Viriato will be fondly remembered by his loving family including his wife Maria Madeira; son Antonio (Shelley) and their two daughters Courtney and Chelsey; son Roy and his children Madison and Ayden; his brother Joaquim (Delfina) and their children Maria, Carlos (Cathy) and her children Shelby and Kirby; brother Tony (Jhan) and their children Kegan, Kaylan, Kelsey and Kaprie; Kelsey’s son Jackson; Cesar (Fernanda) and their sons Acacio and Danny; Danny (Jamie) and their son Lincoln; sister-in-law Maria do Céu and her children José, Joaquim and Laurenda; sister-in-law Biatriz and her children Marie Alice (Jose Antonio) and their children Andre and Vásco and Jose Luis (Ineza).

Viriato enlisted in the Portuguese Army as a young man and then worked in mines da panasqueira (Portugal), a cheese factory in Poligny, France and in construction but retired as a farmer. Viriato and Maria loved to travel back to Portugal on several occasions and enjoyed taking trips to various hot springs around BC. He was a proud member of the Oliver Portuguese Club and Christ the King Catholic Church. Viriato loved to work on puzzles, fishing for very small fish, playing bisca card game at the Portuguese Club, watching his granddaughters playing soccer on the pitch and nurturing and caring for his grape plants.

Prayers were recited at 3:00 P.M. Sunday March 2, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church. A funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Neil Lustado at 10:30 A.M. Monday March 3, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment and committal followed at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A reception was then hosted by the CWL in the church lower hall.

Donations are gratefully accepted for the BC Cancer Foundation, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L3.

The family would like to thank the Penticton Regional Hospital staff, the SOGH staff and the Kelowna Cancer Society.
