Winnifred Gaye Covert (nee Dunham) 1910 – 2009
Winnifred Gaye Covert (nee Dunham) or Mimi to her immediate family; Wyn to her friends and Mrs. C to cherished others, passed away on November 23, 2009 at Penticton Regional Hospital surrounded by her family at the age of 99 years.
She was pre-deceased by her husband George Covert, (1996) and her sons Calvin (1996) and Michael (2004). She leaves behind her daughter in-law Diana; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Gene (Shelly) Covert, their children Kaelan, Faolan & Rhya, of OK Falls, BC; Ashley Covert (Brandon Glaza) of Nelson BC; Allison Covert (Jaime Demetrick) of Kamloops BC; Cathy (Kipp) Krivoshein, their children: Paige, Kaley, Riley & Kody, of Kelowna BC; and Christopher (Melanie), their children Emily, Joe & Lily, of Westbank BC.
Winnifred was born on October 23, 1910 in Fresno, California to Ethel (nee Maneely) and Richard Gay Dunham. She attended the University of California at Berkley where she received a teaching degree and taught mathematics at her former high school, Fresno High until 1939.
She fell in love with George Covert and proudly supported him in his farming and racehorse businesses in California. In 1959, they purchased 500 acres, 4 miles north of Oliver, from the Beldam family, which became Covert Farms, and in 1961 they settled in Penticton.
After the death of her husband, in 1996, Winnifred continued to travel to southern California in winters, and enjoyed the Okanagan and her family in the summers. Although she was unable to travel in the last few years of her life, she continued to enjoy living in her own home with the help of her three wonderful caregivers Jeanne, Karen and Arlene.
Winnifred was an immensely proud and beautiful woman with strong opinions and great convictions. She adored her family and cherished her friends. She passed away with a clear mind and a passion for life.
Winnifred is honored by the family in the name of their winery “Dunham & Froese”.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday December 11, 2009 at the Oliver Cemetery, with a Memorial reception at the home of Diana Covert on Covert Farms to follow.

Dear Diane, Gene, Ashley and families- I was saddened to read of Wynn’s passing online this morning, as she was such a strong matriarchal presence for all of the Covert family. I may have never won an arguement with her, but she could debate anything at anytime- and yet this same woman cried on my shoulder when Mike died. She will be missed by all of you, as another generation passes on, but certainly she will never be forgotten.
